The Gateway of India: obligatory photo, obligatory visit within Mumbai. Halfheartedness abundantly visible in this composition, as it is difficult to appreciate such a blatant symbol of imperialism. And yet, there is perhaps a certain happiness that can be found in the city’s embracing the monument, in it having been not only the initial point of entry for the British, but also the passage point for the last British troops to leave India in 1948, and in its harmonious fusion of both Hindu and Muslim architectural traditions.
