Having been a member of the education group for the length of the quarter, I dedicated much of my time and research to determining creative and effective ways to pass along information on sustainable practices within agriculture. One topic my group focused on was that of composting, and I developed what came to be known as “Compost Uno” in hopes of teaching school-aged children about composting in a fun way. As life would have it, food scraps and most anything else that might go in a traditional compost pile go directly to the livestock in the regions of Gujarat we visited, so our method of composting in the U.S. was not so applicable. However, Sadguru has an awesome vermicomposting program set up (by which you unite worms with manure and dry, decomposing plant matter to cultivate nutrient-rich, organic fertilizer) that we were able to see in action at a number of different homes. And, Compost Uno turned out to be a decent way to pass time in the airport, where you could say we spent a decent amount of time.
